Rotary District Governor to speak Thursday

One of the highlights for Rotary clubs is learning about the bigger picture of Rotary International.  Our Club Founder, Tom Gump, will be present at our next Zoom meeting, 8 October 2020 at 7pm to update and inspire us.  Many of you were personally invited to join Rotary by Tom a year ago.  This meeting will include a virtual celebration of the 1 year anniversary of our Charter as a Rotary Club and a challenge to us as a veterans club to "Service Above Self."  Please log-in to the meeting with a favorite drink in hand for a toast to our club's anniversary.

Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

Tom writes about his club visits, "During conversations with you we have been inspired by your continued active participation in your club meetings; the amazing service and community projects clubs continue to be involved in; your fabulous questions about Rotary’s ongoing efforts to eradicate polio and our new focus area, Environment; and finally, by YOU!  We thoroughly enjoy getting to know you better and to hear stories of why you joined Rotary and why it is important to you."

Tom will also have the privilege of inducting our newest Rotary Club of Minnesota Veterans members virtually.  We look forward to a powerful night together.

Vets Blood Drive - Thursday 29 October
American Red Cross
American Red Cross

Here are five reasons to participate in serving others by donating blood:
  1. Your entire appointment (entry to exit) only takes about an hour.
  2. Just one donation could help save more than one life.
  3. Only about 3 percent of eligible Americans will give blood this year.
  4. Blood donors are essential to helping patients every day, especially during a pandemic. (That’s why we’ve got extra safety precautions in place.)
  5. You could win one of 5 $1000 Amazon gift cards by donating during the month of October!
Will you give life this month?  This will be the 3rd Blood Drive that has been sponsored by the Rotary Club of MN Veterans during COVID-19.  When the need is great - veterans rise to the occasion! Please serve beside us - and invite others.

Upcoming opportunity to give blood hosted by the Rotary Club of MN Veterans:

Haven for Heroes Grant Presentation

In September, members of our club presented a grant to Haven For Heroes.  In partnership with Rotary International, District 5950, and area Rotary Clubs we are honored to provide a grant of $20,000 to serve veterans by updating and furnishing a family room for years to come.  The Anoka Community has preserved, restored, and provided these historical Cottages and Auditorium for the purpose of helping our veterans. This is a grateful community filled with those who have served, past and present, and civilians who are appreciative, thankful, and eager to give back to our heroes.

Learn more about Haven for Heroes.  The project, while slowed by the pandemic, has moved forward.  We partnered with other companies who helped provide labor and materials to repair the century old building.  Thanks to all our club members and families and other Rotarians who have pitched in during our service days. There is still much work to do on the building.  The roof has been rebuilt. New windows and the boiler are next.  Then our grant will be used to furnish the family room.  Watch for more work day opportunities and then the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Maple Plain War Memorial
The Rotary Club of Minnesota Veterans Foundation has partnered with with Orono Rotary and other Rotary clubs on a War Memorial Park.  With a Rotary District Grant, implementation is underway which will include six reflection benches and benches and 150 Flags for Heroes to be posted Memorial Day, Flag Day, Fourth of July and Veterans Day.  The desire is for an official groundbreaking on Veterans Day 2020.

Thank you to our officers who participated on this great project by helping form and pour cement for the benches.
